What is Patchouli Oil?

Patchouli oil is obtained from a plant of the genus Pogostemon. The Lamiaceae family includes lavender, mint, and sage. The oil is extracted by steam distillation of the dried leaves, collecting the oils that accumulate on the water. The part used is the leaves. It has a strong, spicy, and herbal scent. Approximately 20-30 ml of essential oil is obtained from about one kilogram of patchouli leaves.

It is known to have metabolism-boosting and detoxifying effects. It is said to have been used as a flavoring in foods during the Roman era.

In the perfumery industry, patchouli oil is preferred for base notes due to its strong scent. For external use, it is diluted with water and used via inhalation through air diffusion.

What is Patchouli Oil Used For?
